Sculpting

Kaolin

I have a passion to work with character creation or game art. I feel inspired to work with 3D and sculpting and whilst I have not done these for clients as yet, I would love to get to a space where I can create characters or artworks professionally.

This design was created in my spare time and I am currently still learning new methods and mediums for how I want to create these pieces. Each feels unique to me and even though they are rough concepts and more work can be put into them to refine them, I feel as though they convey a sense of personality for the characters. I aspire to possibly work with a team in the future to see these designs come to life.

I currently work with a freelance writer Gareth Swart, who crafts various worlds and stories around the characters to create a sense of believability.

Software Used

I used Zbrush to concept up the initial designs and shapes of the characters. I then exported material maps and combined and refined them in photoshop for the final render. I used Pureref to pull references from certain pieces that I liked beforehand to inspire me.

kaolin "The Godeater"

When the gods were first birthed they created the mountain of life. All the souls they divined into being were ranked hierarchaly. The most beautiful and powerful of these beings lived higher up the mountain and the more crude and simple beings lower down. It was said the higher up you went you could even be blessed with seeing the sun and the stars.

At the very peak of the mountain of life stood the Gods themselves, perfect and all-powerful above all. Once the Gods had favored a proud race created from clay to serve them loyally against their enemies. Created only to keep the peace and to protect the Gods they had stood unblemished, but fate is a fatal blade and they could not be protected from the gods or from themselves. Having been tricked by a god they trusted most they unknowingly started a great fire that was said to have melted stone and to have had scoured the entire mountainside. In an eternal fury, the gods cast them down to the very base of the mountain of life. In the mud, there was no light or warmth. Only darkness and shame.

In the coldest winter in the darkest pit, a child was born. The first to be born outside of the light of the gods was a child known only as Kaolin. He knew not of love or warmth or gold, he only knew that fire had once reached the highest peak of the mountain and that his own ambition was mountain high...
